Should you go back to school - Copeland Coaching

Should you go back to school This is a question that comes up often, as it should. Education is important. We all learned that growing up. Whether or not to go back to school can be a tough choice. On one hand, going back to school can feel like the right thing to do. Youre always supposed to be learning right? On the other, its expensive and time consuming. To compound things, youre not as young as you used to be. You have responsibilities like a spouse, children, a house, a job, The list goes on and on. Ill be honest. The marketing higher education puts out bugs me a little. Theyre selling a hope of a brighter future. If youve ever visited a fertility doctor, it reminds me of all the photos of babies on the walls. Theyre selling hope. Hope that may or may not be fulfilled, due to a number of factors (like your age and how much money you have). So, back to the question at hand Should you go back to school? The first question I have is this. Are you looking to get a second (or third) degree? Are you looking to finish a first degree? Or, are you looking to take one off classes to keep your continuing education up? If youre looking to complete your first degree, or keep up your continuing education, the answer is much more straight forward. If you havent finished college, I am definitely an advocate of going back. It provides some level of stability, especially as you enter the later part of your career. Over the years, Ive worked with a number of job seekers who never completed college. They had great careers and were stellar at their jobs. Then something happened. For example, their company went out of business. It wasnt their fault, or a reflection of their work. Suddenly, they were on the open market, trying to explain to employers why they dont have an advanced degree. Its stressful and can create a sudden decrease in salary in a situation like the one described. When it comes to getting a second or third degree, there are a few things to think about. First, why do you want to get the degree? Theres this rumor floating around that a degree in a particular field will guarantee you work. Lets be honest. That rumor is not true. The result of getting a second degree is highly dependent on lots of things, including what your degree is in and how needed the degree is in the job market. A few reasons you might consider getting a degree are You want to change career paths and re-brand yourself with a new degree. I did this with my MBA. I have a computer and systems engineering degree from undergraduate school. It was hard for me to get people to look past the fact that I knew how to write code. My MBA helped solve this issue. Or, perhaps youre a lifelong learner. Your company pays for you to go to school and you have the time. So, you think why not? Its almost like a hobby and something youve always wanted to do. Its for yourself. I can get behind this. Self improvement is an important part of life. So, say youve decided to go back. Now what? How do you decide where to go? IMHO, deciding where to go to school is almost as important as whether or not to go at all. Very often, I talk to people who went to a for profit university. They invested years of their life and have huge student loans. They are shocked to learn that some employers dont take their degrees seriously at all. So, what can you do? Learn as much as possible about a school. Thinking about why you want to go can help to narrow down your choices. For example, when I entered business school in 2004 (wow, that was a long time ago!), I wanted to learn about starting a business. So, I found a school that had a concentration in entrepreneurship. It was also around the same time that Enron fell apart and Martha Stewart went to jail. I felt a bit concerned about ethics in business, so I looked for a program that put an emphasis on this topic in their coursework. And, I hoped for a scholarship. I put myself through school (after quitting my job), so going to a school that could help me financially was important. Thats how I selected Pepperdine University. Another thing to check out is whats called the post-graduation report. This is a report that both colleges and graduate programs publish once a year on their graduates. It explains which industries their grads are working in and how much they make. Often, the career center helps you to get your first job out of school. And, that career center will have existing relationships with certain companies. For example, my engineering college sees many graduates going to work for places like NASA. Pepperdine however has graduates going to companies such as Disney. You also want to pay close attention to the part about how much the graduates are making. Its sometimes surprising to think about it, but companies often pay different amounts for graduates based on which school they went to. You can argue whether this is right or wrong, but it just is. So, if you have two graduate programs that both cost $20K per year in tuition (for example) and one has graduates who make $70K after graduation, while the other has graduates making $95K, it can help you to pick between the two schools. Another good place to look for these rankings are sites like US News World Report. They have lists of the best schools. The lists contain lots of data that can give you an even better sense of the school and how its viewed by the world. One trend Ive noticed with people returning to school is that they consider enrolling in an online program pretty frequently. Its easier. You can fit it into your life better. Its less disruptive. I would caution you against doing any kind of online degree program. Think about it this way. A big part of what you get out of business school (for example) is networking contacts. You meet new people who go with you through the rest of your career. Theyre your friends. Your colleagues. You help one another get jobs and with projects. You arent going to make those strong connections through an online program. Youre going to make them when you sit next to your classmates day in and day out in class. The same logic applies to something like engineering. How in the world are you expected to truly grasp onto engineering concepts if you never set foot into an engineering lab? Last, think of school as an investment. As with any investment, you should evaluate the ROI. There are many calculators online to help you to figure this out. Heres one from Learn Vest you might try. It helps you to get a sense of how much youll put into school and how much youll get out. Going back to school is a highly personal and highly individual decision. Theres no one answer for everyone. My bottom line recommendation here is DO YOUR HOMEWORK. When you finish school, you want to be sure that you end up with the results you were expecting to. I hope these tips have helped you. How To Avoid The Underemployment Trap - Work It Daily

The most effective method to Avoid The Underemployment Trap - Work It Daily The most effective method to Avoid The Underemployment Trap You've likely done this (or have a companion or partner who has). You're in an all-encompassing pursuit of employment however can't get the meetings or offers you need. Using up all available time and cash, you play a lower-level job just to cover the bills and keep a rooftop over your head. Watch: Fighting Against Underemployment The issue, however, is that once you do this, it gets more enthusiastically to restore your profession to its pre-search direction and compensation. Selection representatives and recruiting chiefs will in general see your bid as discolored and you'll see it more troublesome than any other time in recent memory to land interviews, not to mention win prospective employee meetings. Welcome to the Underemployment Trap! Step by step instructions to Avoid The Underemployment Trap The least difficult approach to stay away from the snare, obviously, it to lead such a proficient quest for new employment, that you have all that anyone could need meetings to deliver the offers you need. Sound simple? It's not, yet there is a science to this pursuit of employment stuff that makes it a lot simpler to make the outcomes you need, on the off chance that you make the correct move ventures in advance. In the event that you need to produce enough extraordinary openings for work in your vocation search to abstain from tolerating a lower-level position, follow these three key activity steps: 1. Devise A Smart Job Search Strategy In the first place, devise a shrewd quest for new employment technique dependent on your vocation targets, brand, and accomplishments that empowers you to get to 200-300 potential open doors in 3-6 months. Why 200-300? Since a pursuit of employment is somewhat of a numbers game â€" it takes a normal of seven prospective employee meet-ups to create one proposition for employment and effort to 200-300 potential chances to produce those seven meetings. In case you're directing a full-time search, you ought to have the option to make your 200-300 contacts in 90 days; on the off chance that you're in low maintenance search, at that point you'll likely need a half year or more to get that going. Yet, what comprises a savvy quest for new employment methodology? In my book, a keen pursuit methodology incorporates: Clear pursuit of employment focuses on that characterize the position levels, titles, organizations, ventures, and geographic zones you are looking for. Enough targets. On the off chance that there are less than 200-300 focuses in your favored geographic zones you will most likely be unable to make enough contacts to produce enough meetings or offers. The correct inquiry strategies. There are explicit strategies you can use to advance your bid. Which ones best suit your profession level, conditions, character, and accessible inquiry time? Which blend of strategies will best empower you to enter the unpublished or Hidden Job Market where 85% of all employments are, instead of dwelling on quest for the distributed or Visible Job Market where every other person is vieing for 15% of accessible occupations? Get familiar with what establishes a savvy quest for new employment methodology. 2. Adjust Your Career Communications To Your Strategy Second, adjust your profession specialized instruments with your pursuit of employment methodology, brand, accomplishments, and vocation story. When your methodology has been obviously characterized, it will act naturally clear which profession specialized devices you need. Most competitors need a resume and LinkedIn profile at least. On the off chance that you intend to do a great deal of systems administration, for instance, at that point you likewise need a systems administration archive to help manage your contacts in helping you access influencers, recruiting administrators, and organizations. Quite a long time ago, resumes were the systems administration device nearly everybody utilized, except nowadays continues are an excessive amount of too early for most systems administration circumstances. In these cases, a brand bio or one-page organizing resume (in some cases additionally alluded to as a promoting brief) is an a lot more intelligent systems administration instrument. In the wake of distinguishing which vocation specialized apparatuses you need, your next errand is to adjust their situating to your profession image and accomplishment history. Additionally, ensure your resume utilizes the correct structure. In case you're now underemployed, for instance, your resume structure may should be adjusted to assist you with recounting to your profession story all the more adequately. This implies, at any rate, your resume needs: A title and slogan that grandstand your image. A watchword driven rundown that features your image and accomplishment outline. A resume structure that presents your profession story in a good manner. A solid supplement of evaluated accomplishments that demonstrate your capacity to play out the level and sort of jobs you are seeking after. 3. Adjust Your LinkedIn Profile With Your Strategy Third, adjust your LinkedIn profile with your pursuit of employment procedure, brand, accomplishments, and profession story. Since 96% of selection representatives are using LinkedIn as their #1 competitor sourcing instrument, you can't stand to be imperceptible or play little on this long range interpersonal communication stage. Utilized astutely, LinkedIn has highlights that can supercharge your hunt. At first, your LinkedIn center ought to be to construct a solid profile and afterward to produce a solid system. When these two columns are set up, you're prepared to utilize push and pull showcasing strategies. Push quest for new employment self-advertising includes tenderly carrying your nomination to the consideration of key individuals, for example, selection representatives, recruiting officials, and industry influencers. Pull pursuit of employment self-advertising utilizes web based life to polarize or draw in selection representatives and recruiting administrators to your profile. I suggest utilizing a blend of the two procedures in your pursuit to amplify your outcomes. An underemployment-confirmation LinkedIn profile needs: A feature that positions you look for the scope of occupations, levels, and ventures you're seeking after. In case you're searching for jobs that extend from the ranking executive to VP level, for instance, your LinkedIn situating should make that understood. An outline that presents your profession story and brand in condensed structure. Industry-adjusted watchwords in each conceivable segment. A work history structure that presents your order to further its best potential benefit. Note this isn't generally a similar structure you use for your resume. Proof of your ability as a full Skills Expertise list, extra LinkedIn areas as fitting, and supplemental archives or media that flush out your image and empower scouts, industry influencers, and recruiting administrators to become more acquainted with you. The pitiful truth is that if each pursuit of employment competitor did the entirety of the above significantly less experts would get caught in underemployment. In the event that you'd prefer to be one of the fortunate ones, be set up to lead a keen profession search with the correct procedure, the correct apparatuses, and the correct usage. Why its OK to fail University of Manchester Careers Blog

Why it’s OK to fail Written by Humanities Careers Consultant, Helen Buzdugan If you’re making job applications at the moment, you will almost certainly encounter failure and rejection, if you haven’t already. It’s tough, but it’s normal. More than that, it’s actually a GOOD THING. As a society, we focus far more on success than we do on failure. A quick Google search yielded almost twice as many results for the word “success” (1.32 billion) as it does for the word “failure” (683 million). We tend to admire success in others, and believe we should strive for success in our own lives, but there are some problems with this approach. Focussing purely on success can deter you from taking risks, as you may be afraid that if you do something outside your comfort zone, you will fail. For example, I see students who tell me “I’m not going to bother applying for X job, because it’s too competitive, and I wouldn’t get it anyway”. And with that, they let their dreams float away. I know it’s tough facing the prospect of putting a great deal of time and effort into doing online tests, making applications and going to interviews and assessment centres, when you know the level of competition for that dream job is high. But someone has to get that job, and most of the other graduates will probably be feeling the same way as you. Plus, if you live by that logic, only daring to do things which have a guarantee of success, you wouldn’t ever try anything new. Remember, with job applications, you have to be in it to win it! Secondly, focussing purely on success can make your self-esteem vulnerable. It may lead you to set unrealistic expectations that you will always achieve high standards in whatever you do or that you should ‘get it right first time’. If you don’t give yourself permission to make mistakes the first, second and even the hundredth time you do something, you will be less resilient when you do something less than perfectly, or when factors outside of your control (e.g. other more experienced candidates or unstated employer demands) thwart your ambitions. Job interviews are a great example of a new skill that you can’t necessarily expect to excel at the very first time you do it. It takes practice to get it right, and even experienced people who have done hundreds of interviews still get nervous sometimes and have off days. Perhaps most importantly, when you are successful, there’s less opportunity to learn and grow. Most successful entrepreneurs have had plenty of failures en route to success. Just look at Richard Branson. Failure provides us with fertile ground to learn more about ourselves and particular skills and situations, so that we can develop and improve our performance. The best response to failure is a ‘growth mindset’ approach. A person with a growth mindset will look critically (but not judgmentally!) at what went wrong in a situation, analysing the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of what happened, and assess what they could do differently next time. This might involve asking for honest feedback from others, e.g. from a recruiter following an interview in which they were not successful. Crucially, they will believe they can improve, and they will be willing to try and fail. JK Rowling â€" someone who has experienced the extremes of failure and success â€" once said, at her Harvard University commencement address: “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might not have lived at all.” So I urge you to go out there and try. Apply for that job that you believe you have no chance of getting. Go to that interview that is way out of your comfort zone. And when you mess up, hear nothing back, or are rejected, remember that it’s a normal human experience, pat yourself on the back for giving at your best shot, and think about how you could do better next time. And then one day, with perseverance and a sprinkling of luck, you will nail it! All Positive thinking

Vanity Presses and Self-Publishing Today

Vanity Presses and Self-Publishing Today Vanity Presses and Self-Publishing Today Vanity distributing or endowment distributing depicts a plan by which a distributer (a vanity press or appropriation distributer) makes bound duplicates of books for writers for an expense. There is commonly no guarantee of deals help and the sponsorship distributer doesn't keep a level of deals. While there are numerous similitudes, independently publishing (otherwise called DIY distributing or non mainstream distributing) is a later term that alludes to the procedure by which a writer distributes their own work into the exchange book commercial center, planning to offer it to a wide crowd. While money related game plans vary broadly, much of the time, the merchant of the work keeps a portion of the returns. Vanity Publishing: Some Context Vanity presses have since quite a while ago existed to permit any creator to have their ideal substance bound between two spreads. Vanity presses have regularly been locked in to create duplicates of books with a constrained crowd, for example, family ancestries, corporate chronicles, or now and again close to home assortments of sonnets or network cookbooks utilized for gathering pledges. In prior occasions, before digital books and print-on-request innovations, vanity presses required the writer to buy a considerable number of duplicates of their book forthright. Innovative restrictions of conventional book printing and restricting procedures, just as the monetary real factors of book creation, made little scope vanity distributing a costly recommendation. Furthermore, on the grounds that the distributers generally didnt offer much in the method of book appropriation, book promoting, or exposure support, credulous or ignorant writers who had desires for deals past a little friend network and family were once in a while confronted with a storm cellar or carport brimming with extra vanity press books. Vanity squeezes despite everything exist to give article to-book restricting support of the individuals who are eager to pay for the distributing administration. Customary vanity distributers may at present be the decision for organizations and people who need the full-administration distributing experience; who need to part with a physical, hardcover print book to their crowd; and who have the way to pay a premium for the administration. There is some hybrid between vanity presses and full-administration independently publishing administrations. Vanity Publishing versus Independently publishing In the 21st century, advancements have made it conceivable to disperse your work into a similar commercial center as exchange books from customary distributers. Print-on-request machines (frequently accessible in book shops) permit writers to print and tie little amounts of printed independently published books. Presently a writer just needs to create what the individual in question needs to continue, permitting even a solitary peruser to purchase a solitary book on request. Advanced innovations have made it simple and economical to transfer and broadly disperse digital books, so essayists can distribute under the control of perusers with no printing cost. This has also changed the way books-both digital books and print books-are conveyed and advertised: Web book deals and appropriation channels - Internet deals and dispersion channels, started by Amazon.com, significantly changed the manner in which print books were offered to shoppers. Online retailers have made deals channels for digital books transferred through chosen administrations, also. For instance, Barnes Noble Press offers a digital book and print independently publishing administration. Print-on-request benefits, (for example, Blurb) make it simple for anybody to arrange a printed book from their sites and have made other option, simple to-get to online deals channels for print-on-request books, also. Online book advertising and exposure - Other computerized powers, for example, the expansion of web journals as-periodicals and web based life, have made it feasible for a shrewd writer to advance their book through web channels requiring little to no effort. A case of an effectively independently published and self-advanced digital book writer is Amanda Hocking, who writes in the paranormal type. These variables have changed the vanity distributing scene and made independently publishing a feasible choice for some journalists and other inventive individuals who need to sell their work, yet who have not been effective at finding an abstract operator to speak to them or a conventional exchange house to distribute their book. Thus, theres been a multiplication of independently publishing organizations a large number of which, as iUniverse, offer an extensive scope of administrations to match any exchange distributing house. Be that as it may, effective independently publishing takes as much research, work and information as one probably (and ought to have!) spent composing a book-particularly if expecting to offer it to outsiders on the quality of the books content.
